You might know Estrella Meerman from her Instagram by.es.trella. We (The Singing Ant team) are in love with her home and kids’ rooms - which she always captures in beautiful pictures on her Instagram. Estrella is a hairstylist, starting her career in interior styling, married to Sjimmie and a mom of two boys Nairo (3) & Vays (2). They live in Vlissingen, a fishermen’s city in The Netherlands with a beautiful marina and a beach. Today on Mother’s Day, Estrella shares her best interior tips for your home, including the kids’ room and her biggest learnings in motherhood.
“We moved to our home last year and renovated the top floor and the garden. When you enter our home, you will see a Scandinavian interior style, with rotan details."
“The garden is my favorite place at the moment. I feel I can be as creative as I like when it comes to styling our garden. And it’s great to spend time with the kids here, outside.”
The interior in our home changes very often. I think my husband is used to it about now ;).. It’s something I would do as a child as well, I painted my room in so many colors. Now that I think of it, it’s very sweet my parents let me do that. I think I got the creativity from my mom, she made our clothes herself.”
Your best interior decisions
“Storage boxes, baskets and closets. They give the room a sense of calmness – it’s great for putting away the toys – and you can make it part of your interior style, since there are plenty of beautiful designs available.”
Keeping all the basics in neutral colors and combining it with accessories that stand out. When you keep all the basics at home (walls, furniture) in a calm and neutral color, it’s easier to change your interior from time to time – without having to replace furniture or repaint the walls.”
“Creating corners with sections in a different color. I am so proud of this corner in Nairo’s room. A corner like this one, keeps the calm vibe of the room present, but makes room stand out more.”
“The kid’s room. Kids need to be able to play, run and climb. So, I made sure that their room is safe enough to do that. Nairo and Vays can be very active, therefore it’s good they have a firm play mat that keeps them safe while playing."
"What I’m actually most proud of is the tent I for Nairo’s bed, that I made with my mom. I shared this DIY project on my Instagram.”
Your two boys
“Nairo is three years old. His name is actually Colombian, my husband got familiar with this name through professional cyclist Nairo Quintana. And Vays is two years old. I woke up one night when his name came up in my mind and wrote it down immediately. As they’re not that far apart in age – I got pregnant of Vays when Nairo was five months old - it’s as if they’ve never been apart.”
Your biggest learnings as a mother
“I think it’s beautiful that every child is raised differently. Kids teach and show other kids what they know and learned - and often kids teach their parents important life lessons as well. I think it’s a way for us all to keep learning and growing.”
"Becoming a mom really taught me that we’re mostly rushing through life. And I think other moms would agree, kids do not live by our schedules. I learned that taking my time and enjoying every moment, makes our lives (and our children’s) less stressful, and that I want to avoid these stressful moments as much as possible."
"Next to that, I capture as much memories as possible, as time goes by so quickly. I remember how recently I scrolled back through my photos and videos and found this movie of Nairo, where he meets Vays for the first time. I’m grateful that we captured this special moment."
